The attitude, actions, participation and interactions on behalf of an individual traveler all directly and indirectly affect the outcome for all involved in the traveling experience. As a responsible and conscious traveler there are several things you can do, before, during and after your adventure to ensure that your experience lies within the principles of "ecotourism" as well as minimize your impact on a country.
Carbon offsets are one way of being a responsible and conscientious traveler. Everyday we are all responsible for carbon dioxide emissions, whether it is through our driving, heating or cooling our homes, watching tv, or traveling abroad. Carbon offsets represent the act of reducing an equal amount of carbon somewhere else in order to counterbalance the carbon emissions from your carbon footprint (your energy using activities). Through carbon offsets, anyone can reduce their climate footprint by supporting projects that reduce CO2 emissions to balance out one's own carbon footprint. For this reason, Eco Xpedition Tours has developed an offset program that allows every one of its travelers to minimize their carbon footprint. By offsetting your CO2 emissions used in traveling to Nicaragua and throughout your expedition in Nicaragua you will be supporting a local farm in Ocotal in a reforestation project. Please visit the Reforestation Project page to learn more about this.
As a responsible traveler you always want to be mindful of local traditions and etiquette. Eco Xpedition Tours will ensure that you are aware of cultural norms at all times; however, it is also important that you do your own research so that you may be prepared. Always keep in mind that you are a visitor in someone else's home and you want to serve as an example for other travelers les informed than you.
Be flexible. Approach your adventure with an open mind and you will not be disappointed. Sometimes plans change and you may be afforded with an opportunity for a more in depth learning and cultural experience. Adapt to your situations rather than attempting to adapt the situation to you.
Conserve resources. Be aware of the resources being used because of your visit, such as water consumption, wood for fires, specialty foods being cooked. For this reason, Eco Xpedition Tours has linked with smaller, self sustainable eco lodges that were once or still are owner occupied homes that do not require more resources to maintain as a large luxury hotel would.
With Eco Xpedition Tours you will be asked to minimize your environmental impact by supporting the International "Leave No Trace" Rules. As such you will be asked to never litter, dispose of waste properly, never remove any objects, plants or animal products from nature, and to be aware of local endangered or threatened species, so as not to purchase any souvenirs made from their skin, feathers, etc.
Eco Xpedition Tours also helps support its local economies. We use only local transportation, guides, inns, restaurants and markets in an effort to directly benefit the local economy.
Lastly, your eco friendly adventure should be educational, before and during. Eco Xpedition Tours will provide you with reading material about Nicaragua, the environment and its people prior to your departure in order to ensure that your trip will have as minimal negative impacts as possible.
