Coffee Tour

This tour was designed for the true naturalist at heart. Organic coffee production, also known as Black Gold, is the country's leading export product, and recently, the nation's tourism ministry officially launched the Coffee Route, or La Ruta de Café, in northern Nicaragua. Eco Xpedition Tours will take you through picturesque coffee plantations and village areas where locals live in comparative isolation and teach you about the organic methods local farmers are implementing. Nestled more than 3000 feet above sea level, Nicaragua's cloud covered mountains offer orchid covered forests of mahogany, cedar and pines providing an idyllic setting for hiking, and trekking.

Day 1: Your journey begins with your arrival to Managua, Nicaragua. You should plan to arrive at the airport (MGA) by 1:30pm where you will be met and greeted by your Eco Xpedition Tours leader. We will take a private transfer to Selva Negra Organic Coffee Plantation in Matagalpa where we will be lodging. Later in the evening we shall have dinner and live entertainment where we will also have the opportunity to have an information session. (D)

Day 2: After breakfast we embark on a Coffee Plantation and Beneficio Tour that this model sustainable farm has to offer, where you will have the opportunity to learn all about the most popular morning drink in the world and what goes into producing it. After lunch you can enjoy the many hikes the eco-resort has to offer, read a book in one of the beautiful gardens, or take a walk around the lake. We will meet up again in the evening and take a short drive into the town of Matagalpa for a night of cultural entertainment and dinner. (B, L)

Day 3: This morning after breakfast we will enjoy the plantation on horseback, taking some of its trails and visiting the farm and stables. We will then gather for lunch and then you are free again to enjoy the beautiful and natural activities that are offered to you here on your own. We will meet up again in the evening and head back into town to explore some of the town's highlights and enjoy dinner. (B, L)

Day 4: We will enjoy one last breakfast at our coffee plantation home and bid farewell as we take a transfer to the town of Estelì where we will have lunch and check in to our hotel. After lunch we head out to visit a small self sustained farm where you can taste some homemade jellies, shakes or "batidos", coffee or tea in their open air "tea room", enjoy a walk in their park, and even purchase some handmade woodwork. We head back to town for dinner and evening entertainment. (B)

Day 5: After breakfast we will take a short drive to Salto la Estanzuela where we will spend the morning enjoying the nature that surrounds this 15 meter waterfall that is considered as the regions most famous swimming hole. We then head to Tisey Reserve for hiking, horseback riding and the best panoramic view in the entire nation. We will return to town for dinner and a nights rest. (B)

Day 6: In the morning, after eating breakfast, we will transfer to Somoto Little Canyon where we will explore a canyon that dates between 5 and 13 million years old and was only recently discovered in 2004. We will explore the canyon by canoe and tubing. In the afternoon we will transfer to the town of Ocotal where we will have lunch, check into our hotel and then enjoy a city tour. We will then pay a visit to a nearby town named Mozonte, the largest indigenous descendant community in the northern region noted for its fine ceramic workshops. We head back to town for dinner and an evening with the locals. (B, L)

Day 7: After breakfast we will visit Dipilto one of the most unique coffee production areas in all of Nicaragua. Here we will visit a self sustained organic coffee plantation and take a tour of their simple yet rewarding lifestyle and have a taste of their fresh coffee. We head back to town to enjoy lunch at a quiet restaurant nestled in the forest in front of a mountain river cascade. We then say adios to the northern region of Nicaragua and La Ruta del Café and transfer back to Managua for dinner arrival. (B, L)

Day 8: Rise and shine! Have breakfast and get ready to be transferred to the airport where we say our "despedidas". (B)
